Removing Pet Odors From Your Carpet

Everyone loves their furry friends. They are playful, loyal, and can be very protective. However they can leave awful odors that are very difficult to remove from beneath your carpet. So what do you do? Most odors occur from pet urination. Your first and natural reaction is to scrub what is first noticeable when you glance over at the stain. However, if your pet has left a stain due to urination, a simple scrub will simply not be enough. Sometimes with urination, the stain can go deep within the carpet and create residue at the bottom within the carpet.

This process is called wicking. You can scrub all day and feel as if you got the entire stain out, but miraculously in a few hours the stain reappears and the odor is a horrid smell. To eliminate the liquid rising up from the fibers, take a thick towel, and place over the stain. Put some pressure on the residue spot overnight. Books work great, and this should absorb all the liquid. The next day, clean the stain once again to make sure it is completely lifted.

Do not use a steamer or hair dryer to dry the stains as heat impulsed can cause the stains to become nearly impossible to remove. You can also try giving the area a great cleaning by placing vinegar on the area, or a mild dish wash soap. Following the cleaning process, sprinkling a nice fragrance powder on your carpet about twice a week helps keep your carpet smell fresh and clean. Another choice would be a substance like baking soda.

Baking soda does not have an odor, so if you don't prefer a fragrance that would be an option for you. If you smell urine but can't locate the location a great secret to finding it would be using a black light. Be prepared and well aware that black lights expose all your carpet's impurities. Loving pets are well worth the work it takes, but we all wish they did not have such a stinky side to them!
