Stained Glass Lamps - How to Care for Your Treasure

Whether it's a real Tiffany lamp or a master reproduction piece you have brought into your home, it is no doubt a focus of attention and beauty in your living space. In order to keep your Tiffany lamp that beautiful you have to do your part.

Tiffany lamps are intricately made pieces of art that are also functional lighting pieces. This means they have all the detailed precision of art, and all the inner-workings of a light, making them double the work to clean and care for. But they're worth it. You should have your Tiffany lamp on a regular cleaning schedule, as you would other similar items in your home.

The kind of cleaning that will be needed depends on the kind of lamp and lampshade you have:

Opaque Glass Tiffany Lamp or Shade - This style of glass can be cleaned with a furniture polish that has been created with lemon oil. You should wipe the polish on with a clean rag and wipe it gently across the surface, making sure all areas are polished evenly.

Transparent Glass Tiffany Lamp or Shade - Treat this glass just as you would other glass furniture in your home. Use glass cleaner to wipe it off and make it look new again. Try to avoid getting any of the glass cleaner on the other parts of the lamp, as they can have adverse effects.

Jadestone Tiffany Lamp or Shade - Lemon-oil based furniture oil should be used to clean jadestone.

Mica Tiffany Lamp or Shade - Do NOT use commercial cleaners on mica. Instead, use a dry or lightly damp cloth to clean the surface.

Fabric Tiffany Lampshade - Fabric does collect dust, but that dust can usually be brushed away with a light duster. Make sure the first few strokes are light, so they are not pushing any dirt into the weave of the fabric. If there are dust particles that don't want to come off with a dusting, you can use a clean, dry rag to brush them away.

Next you have the base portions of the lamp to clean. Luckily, you already likely have the tools needed for this portion of the job. If your lamp bases are made of metal, you can use the same furniture polish made of lemon oil to clean the base and other sections of the lamp. If you have porcelain lamps, you should use warm water, mixed with a mild soap, to clean the base.

If you have a gourmet kitchen with a tiffany lamp, you may have noticed that cleaning that lamp is a lot harder than cleaning the others in your home. That is because there can be a build up of grease and other things that have been used in the course of cooking. These may need a little more of a firm touch to get rid of. A mild kitchen cleaner may come into play to get the grease off. Then dry the surface and polish as recommended above.
